Overview
Conservation International is one of the leading organisations working on nature-based solutions to climate change and the wider conservation movement. The organisation was formed in 1987 and since has helped protect more than six million square kilometres of land and sea across more than 70 countries.
We have worked with Conservation International for several years. Our most recent grant supports Conservation International's work on REDD+ in Kenya.
Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (or REDD+) was designed to incentivise governments to preserve forests. However, due to differing applications and methodologies, REDD+'s contribution to sustainable climate action has been questioned.
To help improve REDD+ in Kenya, there needs to be a cohesive national approach to the governance, monitoring and measurement of emissions reductions by local REDD+ projects – and social factors need to be more formally embedded in the national programme. With our funding, Conservation International is supporting the adoption of a national approach to REDD+ in Kenya – a exercise known as ‘nesting’ – while ensuring local commuties are properly safeguarded.
