InfluenceMap

Influence Map is a global non-profit think tank working on the cutting edge of climate and sustainability issues. Under its two workstreams, LobbyMap and FinanceMap, it generates innovative analysis for use by investors, corporations, policymakers, campaigns, and a range of other influential actors to hold sectors to account on climate performance.

Overview

InfluenceMap works on the cutting edge of climate and sustainability issues by generating innovative analysis for a range of influential actors to hold corporates to account on climate performance.

The IPCC has identified ‘incumbent’ fossil fuel interests ‘exerting political influence’ over the policymaking process as a key barrier on climate action. Vested influence and lobbying represent a systematic blocker to climate action (and action on other SDGs and societal challenges). To date, powerful lobbying has diluted and delayed policies across the world in carbon tax adoption, clean energy, shipping, vehicle, and aviation regulations. Such ‘regulatory capture’ slows momentum and weakens institutions.

It is often the case that a particular corporation’s net zero commitment is directly undermined by the lobbying activity of an industry association to which it is a fee-paying member. Few corporates have yet realised the need to align their trade associations’ climate policy advocacy with their own goals of net-zero emissions.

Our funding will equip actors at the top of corporates with objective and persuasive data that makes apparent where lobbying is occurring in contradiction to net zero commitments, so that they are empowered as members to take steps that start to diminish the capture of climate regulation.
