Overview
InfluenceMap is an independent think tank producing data-driven analysis on how business and finance are impacting systemic risks like climate change and biodiversity loss. It is the leader in the provision of decision-useful data on responsible political engagement by companies.
Policy is not on track to meet 2030 sustainability goals. If all current climate policy commitments were to be achieved (which is unlikely), we will still see a global average temperature rise of 2.7°C above pre-industrial levels. The same can be said for nature-related policy. Many companies have set deforestation or biodiversity targets, however these commitments often have policy dependencies that are not currently being met. Further, some of the world’s biggest companies are still lobbying to disrupt policy to protect preserve nature and biodiversity.
‘A Legal Framework for Impact’ (LFI) shows that investors should use their powers of asset allocation, stewardship and policy advocacy to manage systemic risks – like biodiversity loss. In fulfilling this obligation investors are well-placed to advocate for strong nature policy – both through the companies they are invested in, and directly with policymakers. However, more tools are needed to mobilise investors to use this particular tool effectively.
InfluenceMap is the leading provider of decision-useful data on lobbying. Its LobbyMap platform grades companies’ climate-related policy advocacy for use by investors in their corporate analysis and portfolio stewardship. Our funding will support InfluenceMap to create scores on companies’ nature-related lobbying and continue important engagement with different stakeholders of their work – investors, NGO’s, corporates and media.
