The International Institute for Environment and Development

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is one of the world’s leading independent policy and action research organisations. Its mission is to build a fairer, more sustainable world, using evidence, action and influence in partnership with others.

Overview

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a global ‘think and do’ tank, with a 50-year history of evidence-based policy influencing for economic and climate justice.

Progress on climate change mitigation, adaptation and addressing loss and damage is painfully slow. While many of the reasons are well known, there are several major blockers to climate action that are barely discussed, for example, indirect sector subsidies and investor-state dispute settlements. These hidden handbrakes need to be released to improve our chances of staying within 1.5°C.

Deep reforms are needed through a systemic, co-ordinated multilateral process. This starts with greater visibility and debate, leading to calls for change that weaken the enabling conditions for existing blockers to remain.

Our funding and support enables IIED to gain momentum, helping to realise the full potential of the movement. The Hidden Handbrake programme involves multiple partners with components of research, coalition building, communications, and targeted influencing.
